The following posting comes from our colleague Ivette Lopez in Austin.
Whenever I think of Hispanics in New York City, I don’t necessarily think of Mexicans. West Side Story and its cast and Jennifer Lopez are two of the biggest Hispanic names that come to mind when I think of the Who’s Who list of Latinos in NYC, and neither are of Mexican origin.
I am biased to think (and rightfully so) that the Mexican concentrations in the states are in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.
I was, however, pleasantly surprised when I read this article on Diario la Estrella from Notimex: Serán mexicanos mayoría hispana en Nueva York en 2025.
According to a study released by the Centro de Estudios para Latinoamerica y el Caribe’ (CLACLS),Mexicans will be the largest Hispanic group in New York in the year 2025.
I stand corrected.
The 2010 census is right around the corner and many of us expect Hispanic numbers to increase and therefore marketing to and communicating with to Hispanics will become even more of a priority for many. The power of our Latino community is ever increasing and extends well beyond our buying power. We see it now transcending into a louder influence behind the polls, on the football fields and baseball stadiums and on screen.
The article from Notimex is but a reminder that Hispanic growth is not yet subsiding and neither is the need to connect via effective communications.
